Greetings from Vitaly Saveliev, General Director of PJSC "Aeroflot – Russian Airlines"

Генеральный директор ПАО Аэрофлот Виталий Савельев

Dear Passenger,

Welcome aboard this Aeroflot aircraft.

Each year, our company strengthens its position on the global air transport market. Aeroflot’s steady growth is continuously recognised by key industry rankings. This year has been no exception: based on data from 2018, the authoritative American publication Air Transport World has once again included Aeroflot Group on the list of the top 25 world airlines by passenger traffic. The Group was ranked 17th, rising two spots from last year.

According to Air Transport World, Russia’s biggest airline holding company has leading positions by a number of other criteria as well: Aeroflot Group was ranked 15th by revenue passenger kilometers and made the global top 25 in terms of operational revenue. Moreover, for the third year in a row, we continue to hold the fifth place in Europe by passenger traffic among traditional carriers.

The fact that Aeroflot Group has firmly established itself among the world’s elite trendsetters is further confirmed by Airline Business, the UK top-tier industry publication. This magazine has ranked our company 18th globally for passengers carried and 16th globally by revenue passenger kilometres in its 2018 airline rankings.

In the September issue of Aeroflot magazine we will tell our readers about the most interesting sporting and cultural events of the upcoming month, as well as new books and films.

Actress Elena Lyadova explains why she ignores the advice of doctors who tell her she should worry less, chief conductor of the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra Pavel Kogan reveals how one can feel like they are back home in Russia while touring in Japan, and choreographer and stage director Oleg Glushkov shares his take on the story of the notorious Addams family.

The Travel Section will help you make sense of the intricate ornaments of wooden churches and navigate your way through the tangled passages of mines in mystical Romania, discover the best hiking trails and seaside markets on the Canaries, feel the spirit of the imperial Vienna, pick the most camera-friendly lighthouse in Southern Sweden, find the ‘Peterhof of Spain’ (and make a journey around it in a kayak) in the vicinity of Madrid, and learn for whom the bells of Indian Buddhist monks toll. For those who want to fill some blanks on their personal map of Russia, we have stories about the feather-grass steppes and Sarmatian gold of Orenburg Oblast and the best spots of Yalta to look for rose-colored water lilies and the sweetest onions.

Coffee stouts, the gueuze of Brussels, rare abbey beers, rapid fermentation ales of Scotland, whisky barrel aging, and beer foam scrapers: it turns out beer is not as simple as it may seem at first sight. As for beer snacks, they can be nothing short of astounding: take fried ferns with porcini mushrooms or panna cotta covered with kriek lambic froth.

The Reading Section will feature an excerpt from ‘Grishka the Princess’ by Aleksander Genis. One of the pioneers of Russian culinary prose and an acute traveler, Genis is now exploring the peculiarities of Russia’s traditions of feasting, with his trademark humor.

September marks the long-awaited off-peak travel season. It’s time to collect one’s thoughts, take stock of the year so far and set ambitious plans for the future. The arrival of September has a beneficial effect on the life not only of the Mediterranean resorts, but also on the metropolitan areas.

As always, the new edition of Aeroflot Premium reveals the most anticipated events of the month. Among the special reports in September is a look of the Russian capital's premium real estate market, and previews of the main yacht exhibitions of the Cote d'Azur — Cannes and Monaco.

In this issue, the spotlight turns to the director of the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Museum of Theatre and one of the most influential theatre managers in Russia, Anton Getman.

The Travel section contains the most original and exotic journeys: the non-French Alsace and a fruity jaunt around Astrakhan. For those who like a good wine to go with their luxury accommodation, then the Best of the Best category serves up a delightful selection of the best hotels and vineyards.

Also within the pages of this issue, we present a touching retrospective of the classic Russian photographer Vladimir Lagrange.

Aeroflot Style

The September issue of Aeroflot STYLE is all about the business woman. The main item in this figure’s wardrobe is the business suit – the star of leading fashion brands’ autumn collections and of our September photo shoot. The new season on the catwalk wavers between affectation and minimalism, between the festive occasion and everyday life; on this see our traditional analysis of current tendencies in this month’s Fashion section.

Another important mark of this autumn in fashion is clothing made from leather.

Lacquered-leather coats, trousers, skirts, and jackets: this season the boldest of us are wrapping ourselves in leather from head to toes.

This month’s Jewellery section is a survey of the most recent collections of haute-couture jewellery. Whimsical flora and fauna, pieces based on famous literary subjects, unexpected combinations of stones, colourful fantasies, and non-standard designer ideas: all this is to be found in the latest collections of haute-couture jewellery.

In our Beauty section we try out new scents, identify trends in make up, and select face masks which really do work. We also investigate which trends in beauty care will disappear from the scene as quickly as they have arrived and which are likely to remain with us forever.

This issue’s main personalities are actress Liv Tyler, designers Ritsue Mishima and Philipp Plein, parfumier John Molloy, and fashion’s “oldest teenager in the world”, 97-year-old Iris Apfel (see our Reading section for an excerpt from her autobiography).

Have a good flight!
