About the City
Today’s travellers are increasingly interested in the traditions of other peoples of the world, and keen to learn about how their ancestors lived. A trip to Osh, the “southern capital” of Kyrgyzstan, offers a penetrating insight into Bronze Age living. The first settlements, traces of which were found at the city’s main landmark Mount Sulaiman-Too, date back at least 3,000 years. Visitors can chart the development of the local tribes through the fascinating exhibits at the Great Silk Road Museum Reserve, whose name reveals one other historical feature of Osh: in ancient times the city was a bustling hub on the trade route connecting Europe and China. The local market today is still a classic example of the oriental bazaar. Modern Osh is a verdant, picturesque regional centre with a well-developed tourist infrastructure offering guests captivating tours to the famous Chil-Ustun, Chil-Mairam and Keklin-Too caves; walks along the spurs of the Altai Mountains; and climbs to the peaks of the breathtaking Pamirs.
