On March 23 this year JSC “Aeroflot – Russian Airlines” was recognized the best Russian airline in the sphere of cargo and international passenger carriages within the framework of the competition for the national aviation Award “The Wings of Russia – 2005”.
In nomination “Airline of the year – international passenger carrier, group1” three other airlines competed with Aeroflot: “Ural Airlines”, “VIM-Avia” and “Russkoe nebo”.
For the title “Airline of the year – domestic and international cargo carrier” airlines “Atlant-Soyuz” and “Volga-Dnepr” competed together with Aeroflot.
Winners and laureates of the competition were determined by the secret voting of the members representing The Wings of Russia Public Council, which consists of more than 100 members – former heads of the Civil Aviation Ministry USSR, representatives of the Russian government, Federal agencies, heads of noncommercial associations in the sphere of aviation, mass media aviation columnists, etc.
Annual competition “Wings of Russia” was founded in 1997 by the Russian Association of Air Transport Operators, magazine “Air Transport Observer” and consulting company “Infomost”.
OJSC “Aeroflot-Russian Airlines” (RTS: AFTL) is the largest Russian airline with 51% state share. It was established in 1923. It controls about 11 per cent of domestic and 39 per cent of international air carriages’ market in Russia. Aeroflot’s net income is estimated to reach RUR 3.05 billion (approx. USD108m) in 2005. It is included in the list of the 25 leading world airlines based on the financial performance (according to ATW). In 2005 Aeroflot carried 6.707m passengers. The aircraft fleet consists of 83 airplanes. Aeroflot is based in Moscow, Sheremetyevo airport. The company targets to finish construction of its own terminal “Sheremetyevo-3” by the end of 2007.
