Aeroflot’s Shalaika dogs recognised best at the Regional canine show

25 September 2019, Moscow. – Aeroflot’s sniffer dogs took top places at the Regional dog show in individual contest and in “Best pair of the show” nomination. Besides, the airline’s canine service came second in the dog kennel competition.

The regional dog exhibition was organized by the Russian Cynological Federation and the Russian Federation of Service Dog Breeding. The jury assessed the quality and breed of the dogs and selected best individual animals by looks and behavior.

Shalaika dogs are employed by the canine unit of Aeroflot’s aviation security department. Finding explosives is the key duty of the Shalaikas. Everyday dog handlers and dogs patrol the airport and inspect planes to ensure safety.

The Shalaika breed is a jackal-dog hybrid originating from an initial cross-breed of a Lapponian Herder and a Turkmen golden jackal. The breed has inherited the best properties of both predecessors.

Aeroflot uses the unique qualities of their service dogs in R&D. Aeroflot introduced olfactory monitoring – a hardware and software system that includes special gear for dogs to help identify the nature of substances they detect and transmit information to an operator’s computer. The Olfactory Monitoring trademark was registered in Russia and 7 other countries.

In late 2018, Aeroflot registered its own Shalaika breed of sniffer dogs with the Russian Cynological Federation. Aeroflot’s Aeroflot’s dog service is a regular award-winner with the professional community.
