Aeroflot, the Russian Federal Air Transport Agency and UAC Hold “Best in the Sky” Competition for Future Superjet 100 Pilots

6 February 2019, Moscow — The winners of the ‘Best in the Sky’ competition for the top future pilots of the Russian Superjet 100 aircraft have been chosen.  The competition was organised by Aeroflot, in conjunction with the Russian Federal Air Transport Agency (Rosaviatsia) and United Aircraft Corporation (UAC), manufacturers of the Superjet 100. Taking part in the competition were cadets from the  Sasovo and Krasnokutsk branch flight schools of the Ulyanovsk Institute of Civil Aviation, Saint-Petersburg State University of Civil Aviation and the Buguruslan School of Aviation.

The competition was held at the Ulyanovsk Institute of Civil Aviation, named after the Chief Aviation Marshall B.P. Bugaev. It lasted for two days and  comprised two stages - theoretical and practical. The theoretical part of the competition consisted of questions on core aviation disciplines: aerodynamics, navigation, piloting and meteorology. Participants were also tested on their knowledge of English. The practical part of the competition required contestants to demonstrate their level of flight training on the Superjet 100 full-flight simulator.

Egor Oznobikhin, cadet at the UIGA (Ulyanovsk Institute of Civil Aviation) achieved the highest combined score across the two stages. The runner up in the competition was Mikhail Orlovsky, also a cadet of the UIGA. Andrei Kondakov, a cadet of the St. Petersburg State University of Civil Aviation, was awarded third place.

The results of the competition were announced at an award ceremony in Moscow, where the winners were awarded their prizes and given commemorative gifts.

"The ‘Best in the Sky’ piloting competition is the only one of its kind," said Igor Chalik, Deputy General Director and flight Director of Aeroflot PJSC. "This competition has been held for the third year in a row and allows us to choose the worthiest among future pilots. Aeroflot is interested in the promotion of the aviation profession and the development of aviation training. We need young and skilled personnel. Aeroflot is the first and largest operator of the modern aircraft Superjet 100 in Russia. Currently, the Company's fleet includes 50 aircraft of this kind. Last autumn, Aeroflot and the United Aircraft Corporation signed an agreement for the supply of an additional 100 Superjet 100 aircraft."

"This year, the 'Best in the Sky' competition was held for the first time on the training base of the Ulyanovsk Institute of Civil Aviation, part of Rosaviatsia. Over the two days of the competition, the cadets from our aviation universities and schools competed in theoretical and practical training of the Superjet 100. The contestants showed good results and demonstrated their high level of knowledge and skills received at state flight schools.  I am sure that the participants of the competition will be of particular interest to all airlines in the country. I hope that the winners will reach new heights and honourably represent Russia’s aviation schools across the world!", said Alexander Neradko, Head of the Federal Air Transport Agency.

"The 'Best in the Sky' competition has already become a tradition that enables cadets of flight schools to master new levels of professional skill. It provides them an opportunity to obtain a prestigious job as a pilot of a modern passenger aircraft and serves to strengthen the prestige of Russian aviation.  We hope that Aeroflot will continue its policy of replenishing its fleet of domestic aircraft and will expand it in the future, to include both the new Superjet 100 and bring into operation the new MS-21 aircraft," commented Yury Slusar, President of United Aircraft Corporation.

Aeroflot actively supports the Russian aviation industry and is focused on training qualified personnel. The ‘Best in the Sky’ initiative is in line with Aeroflot’s strategic objectives for identifying and coaching promising young professionals, as well as for cooperating with the state to improve the training system for flight personnel. For the fourth consecutive year, Aeroflot has won the prestigious international Randstad Award for best employer in the transport industry. Aeroflot is also the largest operator of Superjet 100 aircraft. The airline’s growth strategy provides for an increase in the share of Russian aircraft through the implementation of contracts for 100 Superjet 100 aircraft and 50 MС-21 aircraft.
