About the City
The city of Kyzylorda, Kazakhstan, was founded in 1820 on the banks of the Syr Darya River as an outpost of the Khanate of Koqand. Today, it is the administrative centre of the Kyzylorda Region, home to the famous Baikonur Cosmodrome, the Barsakelmes Biosphere Reserve and the ancient settlement of Chirik-Rabat—a former trade centre on the Great Silk Road. The city's main sights—the memorial complex with unique acoustics, dedicated to the legendary folk poet Korkyt-Ata, the Aitbai Mosque and the Syr-Ana monument—speak of the vibrant cultural and spiritual life of the people of Kyzylorda, and their love for their native land and its history.
