About the City
Gothenburg, Sweden’s second largest city, is located on the shore of the Kattegat Strait. Founded at the beginning of the 17th century to protect the country's “western gate”, it has since grown into a major industrial centre. Despite that, Gothenburg remains a cosy, green city with plenty of picturesque parks and canals. The historical district of Haga is home to the preserved Skansen Kronan stone fortress and wooden houses imbued with the atmosphere of the old city. On Gata Square, adorned with the Poseidon Fountain, many wonderful festivals take place. Moreover, the viewing platform of the Utkiken skyscraper, known locally as “The Lipstick”, offers a stunning view of the harbour. Architecture aficionados are recommended to take a look at the post-modern building of the Gothenburg Opera, fans of active leisure will be wowed by the Liseberg amusement park, while seafood connoisseurs should definitely visit the fish market, which resembles a Gothic church.
