Aeroflot-Russian Airlines traditional May action for participants of the Great Patriotic War “The Great Victory Anniversary” has been completed. A number of free of charge carriages exceeded the last year amount. More than 5,000 veterans – front-line soldiers, fascist quondam prisoners, people who survived Leningrad blockade (5,000 people in 2004) made Aeroflot free of charge flights to the cities of Russian Federation, Western Europe, CIS and Baltic countries where the airline company makes flights to.
In Moscow 1 751 veterans received free air tickets in Aeroflot ticket offices. In Aeroflot regional representative office 2 995 air tickets were issued. Many veterans from regions used free tickets to participate in celebration actions in Moscow and Saint Petersburg. 99 veterans from Saint Petersburg visited European capitals: Prague, Paris, Berlin, and Warsaw.
Together with the Russian Committee “Victory” Aeroflot provided travels to Moscow to official anniversary celebrations for more than 100 veterans of the Great Patriotic War and the World War II from foreign countries.
The distinctive feature of this action in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War has become expanding system of routes and a number of participants – in anniversary 2005 the action of the airline company was also made for veterans and invalids of the Great Patriotic War who lived in CIS and Baltic countries and in Western Europe.
Information about the action “The Great Victory Anniversary” reached all the regions of Russia where Aeroflot makes flights to. Hundreds of regional newspapers, TV programs reported veterans about an opportunity to make their flights free of charge. Besides the action on free carriages of veterans before holidays Aeroflot arranged reception of veteran delegation of Normandy-Neman squadron with General J. Risso in the head and their meetings with brother-soldiers, renewed its own museum exposition in Sheremetyevo-1, arranged some meetings in schools, arranged the grand meeting for 435 veterans, and provided them with significant welfare.
In the honor of participants of the war – staff of the Civil Air Fleet, Aeroflot initiated and supported a documentary “Air Flight Lasting 60 Years” about pilots of long-haul aviation presented on Russia TV Channel May 9, 2005. The film told us about hardly known episode of the war – hard work and dramatic lives of Aeroflot pilots who provided delivery of ammunition and arming for people's liberation army of Yugoslavia fighting fascists during the war.
Aeroflot provided discount carriages of relatives of Soviet armed forces personnel to burial places abroad. For the first time relatives and children of soldiers buried on the Soviet Field of Glory in Amersfoort, Holland, and who were considered missing visited their relatives’ graves with the support of Aeroflot.
During five years within May actions in commemoration of the Victory Day more than 20 000 people used Aeroflot free air tickets. The Company receives many thanks from veteran committees and other organizations, and in its turn, it thanks its personnel, state and public organizations participated and supported this noble action.
