– “Aeroflot – Russian Airlines”, “The Association of Chess Federations” and the Russian Chess Federation will arrange the chess festival «Aeroflot Open 2007» with a prize fund of $200 thousand in Moscow on February 13 – 23, 2007. Aeroflot supporting the festival as a national sport at the same time serves the event as the general carrier for the participants and will as well lay out the money for the prize fund.
This biggest open chess festival is held for the sixth time. And each year it attracts more and more interest. «Aeroflot Open 2002» collected 370 chess players from 34 countries including 95 Grand Masters. A year later 476 chess players participated the festival. In 2004 the festival accommodated 644 chess players and in terms of Grand Masters – 164 persons – the festival was included in the Guinness Book of World Records.
About 560 players from 57 countries have already applied for participation a week before the festival. It is assumed that number of participants will increase in the meantime and become record as compared with all previous tournaments.
About 125 Grand Masters have already been accredited including: Yevgeniy Alekseev – Champion of Russia 2006, Viorel Bologan – winner of «Аeroflot Оpen 2003», Emil Sutovskiy – winner of «Аeroflot Оpen 2005», Baadur Djobava – winner of «Аeroflot Оpen 2006», Aleksandr Halifman – ex FIDE world champion, Artur Yusupov – multiple Olympic champion, Aleksey Dreev – world champion in team competitions, Yekaterina Lagno – European champion and Olympic champion, Nadezhda and Tatyana Kosintsevs – Olympic prize winners.
Totally 150 prizes will be raffled in four groups. Special prizes will be awarded for the best results among veterans, women and juniors in all tournaments. A winner will get a right to participate in a prestige super tournament to be held in Dortmund.
The solemn opening of the festival to be held on February 13, 2007 at 21.00 in the “Izmaylovo” tourist center is expected to be attended by Aleksandr Zhukov, Deputy Prime Minister of Russia, President of the Russian Chess Federation, Arkadiy Dvorkovitch, Head of Expert Division of Russian President, Valeriy Okulov, General Director OJSC “Aeroflot”, Anatoly Karpov, World champion, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, FIDE President, famous politicians and businessmen.
