About the City
Grozny is the capital of the Republic of Chechnya and the second largest city by area in the North Caucasus. It was founded on 22 June 1818, when General Alexey Yermolov ordered the construction of a fortress in the Sunzhensky Mountains. As the most rapidly developing city in the North Caucasus, this year Grozny celebrates its bicentenary. Modern Grozny is a beautiful, well-kept metropolis with Caucasian flair and a European standard of living. In recent years it has been adorned with numerous parks and squares, architectural and cultural monuments, as well as sports facilities. Every year sees more and more tourists coming here to get to know the authentic traditions of the Chechen people and visit the “Heart of Chechnya” Mosque, the Grozny-City skyscraper complex, the National Museum of the Chechen Republic, the Akhmat Kadyrov Memorial Complex of Glory, and the Akhmat Arena stadium. Visitors can also take a tour of the famous Ushkaloisky Towers in the Argunsky Gorge and the Pkhakoch medieval castle complex, and relax at the high-mountain Lake Kezenoyam.
