Greetings from Vitaly Saveliev, General Director of PJSC "Aeroflot – Russian Airlines"

General Director of PJSC Aeroflot Russian Airlines Vitaly Saveliev

Dear Passenger,

Welcome on board this Aeroflot aircraft!

First, I would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. I am pleased that you have chosen us for your winter travels. Aeroflot’s pilots and cabin crew will do everything to make your festive flight comfortable and create an atmosphere of Christmas cheer and New Year’s magic for your journey.

For Aeroflot, 2018 is a landmark year. In March, we will celebrate our 95th birthday. For nine and a half decades, our company has deservedly been considered one of the most memorable symbols of Russia. And today, Aeroflot in many ways continues to shape the image of a new Russia.

Just ahead of the New Year’s break, we were awarded the title of World’s Leading Aviation Brand, the most prestigious category at the World Travel Awards, which are the global tourism industry’s equivalent of the Oscars. The World Travel Awards are bestowed based on a worldwide poll not just of passengers, but also industry experts. Aeroflot emerged victorious in an open competition with other leading global carriers. The results of this international online vote confirm that the renowned Aeroflot brand is now the best-known and most recognisable in the world.

The year 2017 brought Aeroflot more than 60 triumphs in the form of prestigious international awards and high positions in global ratings. Aeroflot was crowned Best Airline in Eastern Europe for the sixth time at the Skytrax World Airline Awards; awarded Five Star Global Airline status by US passenger association APEX; and named China’s favourite international airline. Aeroflot enters this anniversary year as a modern, fast-growing and high-tech company.

As you can see by the cover, this edition features one of Russia’s folk handicrafts: Mezen painting. Aside from inspiring your creative side, the magazine will also fuel your appetite during the festive period. Read about what Russians once feasted on for Christmas from fried oysters to suckling piglet, before considering a road trip around the Kola Peninsula in the country’s far north...or perhaps you should do it the other way around. In fact, perhaps it’s best to start with our interview with Russian ballet star Diana Vishneva: the thought of all that dancing is sure to make you hungry. We’ve also covered the best eco lodges and natural resorts in the country so you can holiday with clear conscience. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

In the January issue of Aeroflot magazine we will tell our readers about the most interesting sporting and cultural events of the upcoming month, as well as new books and films. Opera singers Anna Netrebko and Yusif Eyvazov will reveal whether it is easy for the star couple to perform together on the same stage; actress Inga Oboldina will discuss what her love for transfiguration brought her to; and biathlete Anton Shipulin will share his personal formula for an ideal birthday party.

The Travel section will help you avoid excessive spending in Hong Kong and at the same time plan a nice personal culture crawl for yourself there, or embrace the charm of Salzburg whether you like Mozart or not. And, as a special for those who fancy going to the Northern Caucasus to ski and find out if seeing Mount Elbrus is really enough to make any wish come true, we got experienced tour guides, skiing coaches, and freeriding enthusiasts to share some advice and useful tips.

For the second time in two years, Russia’s Rosa Khutor Alpine Resort is getting ready to meet the world’s best chefs who will come there in late January to take part in the Ikra International Gastronomic Festival. Our review will help you understand who among them is likely to cook you a must-eat dinner.

Journalist and interpreter Andrey Polyakov has been fascinated by Africa since he was a kid — and spent twelve years studying the continent enthusiastically: he has lived in Mozambique, Zambia, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, and Uganda. Inspired by his discoveries, Andrey wrote the book “Snow at the Equator”, an excerpt of which will be published in our Reading section.

Happiness knows no past or future tense. Happiness is now and remains in the present. An ability to tell happiness apart from a thousand events of the day is a rare skill, so may the New Year make refining it your first goal. The January issue of Aeroflot Premium assembled authors' articles and columns about the joys of life: the pleasure of discoveries, value of travels, beauty of diversity and treasure of knowledge.

As usual, the issue presents a selection of the most interesting and anticipated events of the month, hotel news, restaurant premieres, new car reviews, trendy gadgets, worthy books, best watch and fashion brands. Among the special reviews of the month are gastronomic and enological summaries of the year, a selection of the best hotels that opened in 2017; an article about the prospects of colonising Mars, and an extract from Umberto Eco's reissue of Vertigo.

Foreign readers of Aeroflot Premium are welcome to enjoy editorial materials and columns in English.

Aeroflot Style

The January issue of Aeroflot STYLE is a triumph of good taste — both gastronomic and aesthetic.

Our Fashion section offers a tempting survey of cruise collections for those flying off on holiday to warm countries. If your preferred destination involves snow, then we would draw your attention to one of these season’s hits, the voluminous puffer jacket, while discussing the idea of multiple layers in clothing in general.

The world of the art of jewellery is keeping step with changes in the weather — with necklaces made from diamond ice drops, earrings in the form of snowflakes, and other precious pieces glistening with hoar frost. Incidentally, this season jewellers are proposing a new way in which to wear pearls; on this see our Jewellery section.

This month’s principal personality is Frenchwoman Clémence Poésy. Also ready to entertain you on your flight are singer and actress Zendaya, chef Jonathan Berntsen, young designer Alina Tsyganova, and, of course, our regular columnists.

Finally, the “tastiest” section in this issue is Lifestyle, which this month picks top hotels with restaurants that are definitely not to be ignored, looks at tableware bordering on art, and suggests holiday destinations you will never regret.
