February 3, 2006, Moscow - "Aeroflot - Russian Airlines" Company and the Association of Chess Federations together with the Committee for Tourism of the Government of Moscow will hold "Aeroflot Open 2006" chess championship with $175 thousand bounty fund in the capital between February 7 through February 17, 2006. Aeroflot supporting the championship as the national kind of sports at the same time will serve the event as the general carrier for the participants and will as well lay out the money for the bounty fund.
his world' biggest open championship will be held on 5-th time this year. And every year it attracts more and more interest. "Aeroflot Open 2002" collected 370 players from 34 countries, including 95 Grand Masters. Next year already 476 players took part in the event. In 2004 the championship accommodated 160 Grand Masters with total amount of 644 participants was included into the Guinness Book.
Two weeks before beginning of competition about 587 participants from 57 countries have already applied for participation. It is anticipated that within the rest of the time total amount of participants will increase and the championship will become an out-of-bounds event in comparison with the previous ones.
About 100 Grand Masters are already accredited. The most interesting event is the A1 Competition (highly rated players - ex FIDE world champion A. Khalifman, Olympic Champions A. Moiseyenko and P. Elyanov (Ukraine), V. Malakhov, K. Sarayev and D. Yakovenko from Russia, V. Akopyan from Armenia, K. Georgiev (Bulgaria), A. Nayditch (Germany), K. Sashikhiran (India), J. Veskovi (Brazil) and many others).
Leading female Grand Masters will also attend the championship: World Champion A. Stefanova (Bulgaria), A. Kostenyuk and N. and T. Kosintzevy from Russia, A. Skriptchenko (France), representatives of strongest Chinese chess players delegation.
Totally 100 money bouts will be raffled in four groups. Special prizes will be established for best results among veterans, women and juniors for all plays (totally of $5000). First prize is $25 000, and $3000 for "B" group championship. The Winner will be granted with the right to play the super tournament to be held in Dortmund, Germany.
The entire competition will be divided into 9 legs in accordance with Switzerland system. General Referee is the international referee Gerth Geissen (Holland).
The opening gala to be held on February 7-th, 2006 in "Izmaylovo" tourist center (Gamma Building) at 21:00 will be attended by Chairman Deputy of the Government of Russian Federation, Aleksandr Zhukov, President of Russian Chess Federation, Valeriy Okulov, Aeroflot General Director, famous politicians and businessmen. Championship close ceremony and Winners conference will be held on February 17-th, 2006.
