Nizhny Novgorod, located at the confluence of two rivers, the Volga and the Oka was founded in 13thcentury. Nowadays, Nizhny Novgorod is one of the largest industrial centers and is the fifth largest city in Russia. The engineering and metal workingindustry is the leading industry of Nizhny Novgorod economy. Gorky Automobile Plant produce strucks and cars, and also armored troop carriers.

 

Nizhny Novgorod is includedin the list of 100 cities of the world because of its great historical and cultural value. There are more than six hundred unique historic, architectural, and cultural monuments in the city.

The heart of the city is the grand Kremlin which was built in the early 16th century. There were a lot of churches on Kremlin’s territory but only Cathedral of St. Michael the Archangel remains to the present day. The current building was built in 1631 to commemorate the victory of the national militia. In 1612, the national militia, gathered by Kuzma Minin and Dmitry Pozharsky expelled the Polish troops from Moscow.

The main points of interest of the city.

Cathedral Churchof the Blessed Virgin Mary (Stroganovskya) was build in 1719 on the merchant Grigory Dmitrievich Stroganov means and became one of the most beautiful Russian churches of the XVIII century. Current Orthodox Church is located on the Rozhdestvenskaya Street and is one of the best examples of the Stroganov style. Stroganov Church received the status of architectural monument of federal importance.

The monument to Minin and Dmitry K. Pozharsky. In 1808, the government of Alexander I announced a contest for the installation of a monument to the heroes of Nizhny Novgorod militia, but built a monument, it was decided to establish in Moscow's Red Square. 200 years later in Nizhny Novgorod near St John the Baptist church historical justice was restored – the replica of the Moscow monument to Minin and Pozharsky was installed.

The Nizhniy Novgorod fair – which lasted more than a hundred years old and had a paramount importance in the history of Russian trade and the formation of nation wide market. Fair attracted merchants from all over Russia, from the East (Greek, Turkish, Iranian) and Western Europe. The main Russian goods represented at the fair, were fabrics, wool, leather, fur, metals, from European countries - wool and silk, paints, cosmetics, tools, from Asia - Tea (China), cotton (Bukhara), carpets etc.
