Anniversary tournament ‘Aeroflot Open 2011’ ended

February 17, 2011, Moscow. Today, the tenth international chess tournament ‘Aeroflot Open 2011’ ended in Moscow. It was conducted by ‘Aeroflot – Russian Airlines’ together with the ‘Association of Chess Federations’ and the Russian Chess Federation.

Le Kuang Liem, a Vietnamese chess player, won the anniversary chess tournament ‘Aeroflot Open 2011’. Russian chess players Nikita Vityugov and Evgeny Tomashevsky were the second and third, respectively. In the concluding round, Le Kuang Liem ended in draw with Rauf Mamedov from Azerbaijan and his main competitor Ivan Cheparinov representing Bulgaria at the tournament lost to Nikita Vityugov from Russia.

For a decade, Aeroflot has been the general carrier of participants, provided aid in arrangement and conduct of the chess tournament and granted the tournament’s prize fund.

In 2011, over 300 chess players from 41 countries worldwide took part in the tournament. The participants were divided into three groups in accordance with their ratings, and the contests were conducted as three open tours (A, B, and C) each involving nine rounds based on the Swiss system. In 2011, some changes were made to the content of tours. The A2 tour was abolished; the B group involves chess players whose ratings are between 2,550 and 2,300, and the C tour is intended for players whose ratings are below 2,300.

Aeroflot belongs to 25 leading airlines of the world according to Air Transport World journal, based on the results of its financial and economic activities in 2009 (“operating profit” and “profit margin” categories).

Aeroflot was the first Russian carrier to be included in the IOSA operator registry and it continues to confirm the certificate in a regular way. The airline has successfully passed the Safety audit for ground operations (ISAGO). Aeroflot is a holder of the unified certificate of compliance with the requirements of ISO 9001:2008.
