Company Profile

- Aeroflot is Russia’s de facto national carrier and largest airline. Vitaly G. Saveliev is Aeroflot’s Director General and CEO (since April 10, 2009). 

- Founded by the Russian government on 9th February, 1923, Aeroflot is among the world’s oldest airlines and one of Russia’s most recognised brands.

- Aeroflot was the first Russian airline company to join the International Air Transport Association (IATA) in 1989.

- Through its hub at Sheremetyevo Airport in Moscow, Aeroflot operates flights to 95 destinations in 48 countries (28 destinations in Russia). Inside Russia, Aeroflot has four branches - in St. Petersburg, Sochi, Magadan and Krasnoyarsk. The airline pays a special attention to its presence in the Russian market, especially Siberia and the Far East.

- Aeroflot is Russia’s largest air carrier; it accounts for over 42 per cent of international scheduled and 13.7 per cent of domestic traffic in Russia (with its subsidiaries, around 20 per cent).

- In 2008, Aeroflot flew 9.27 million passengers (13.5% growth to 2007), and with its subsidiaries, as the Aeroflot Group, 11.6 million passengers.

- To meet the needs of its passengers, Aeroflot is increasing its fleet and building its own new hub in Moscow. Terminal D at Sheremetyevo (Sheremetyevo-3) is scheduled to open in late 2009. With annual capacity of 12 million passengers, it will serve Aeroflot’s flights as well as those of its SkyTeam partners. 

- Today, Aeroflot is an airline with an excellent safety record, operational reliability and a reputation for industry leading customer service. Aeroflot was the first Russian carrier to be included in IATA’s Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) Registry. In 2009 the company also obtained the IATA Safety Audit for Ground Operations (ISAGO) certification. Aeroflot is fully ISO 9000 safety credited.

- As part of its commitment to safety, Aeroflot operates the largest Centre of Flight Control (CFC) and Centre of Flight Staff Training in Eastern Europe, with nine facilities in Russia. Aeroflot is working on the project of its own full-scale Pilot Training School.

- Aeroflot is committed to deploying the most effective information technologies, including e-ticketing since 2006, to increase service quality and economic efficiency and relies on modern systems to power its Internet bookings.

- Aeroflot’s Ecological Management and Control System incorporates up-to-date technologies and standards. The company has adopted Energy and Ecological Efficiency Programme till 2020 which is in full compliance with IATA’s ecological strategy. In 2008, Aeroflot won the Best Ecological Project of the Year Award from the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources and Ecology.

Our fleet

Company Profile

Aeroflot’s fleet, which is among Europe’s most modern, youngest and fastest growing, consists of 113 aircraft, confirming the airline’s commitment to the highest economic, safety, ecological and noise standards. In 2009 the company is planning to receive the total of 24 brand-new modern planes.

In 2007, Aeroflot signed multi-billion US dollar deals to buy 22 Airbus A350 jets and 22 Boeing B787 Dreamliners, with deliveries in both cases to start since 2016.

In 2008, Aeroflot started receiving Airbus A330 aircraft which will dramatically expand the airline’s long-haul capabilities and standard of service.

The company has also contracted the new-generation Russian-built Sukhoi SuperJet-100s (Aeroflot has 30 SSJ regional jets on order and intends to acquire 20 more).

Now Aeroflot passengers are able to benefit from all advantages provided by online booking including internet payment via credit card and the electronic ticket. State of the art self-service check-in is provided at the airport Sheremetyevo 1 and 2.

Investor Relations

  • The Russian government owns 51 per cent of Aeroflot. Legal entities and individuals own the remaining 49 per cent stake.
  • In 1993 Aeroflot was registered as an open joint-stock company. JSC Aeroflot – Russian Airlines shares are traded on the Moscow Stock Exchange (MICEX) under the symbol AFLT.
  • In 2008, the net profit of Aeroflot under IFRS constituted $37 million which is a significant drop (88.2 per cent) against the previous year. But facing the global recession, Aeroflot was one of the few airline companies which finished the past year in the black. It is determined to preserve its profitability due to aggressive cost-cutting, very low debt and the completion of major programmes.

Aeroflot plays an active role in its community through on-going
support of charitable organisations and community events.

Aeroflot is actively involved with a variety of social initiatives,
including:

  • Comrades-in-Arms Reunion Programme which facilitates air travel for war veterans during the annual Victory Day celebrations in May.
  • Miles of Charity Programme, a joint project of Aeroflot and Podari Zhizn (Gift of Life) Foundation, which allows frequent flyers to donate their bonus miles to seriously ill children.
  • Children’s Hearts, a foundation that helps make necessary health services accessible for children with congenital heart disease.
  • Downside Up, a society dedicated to improving the quality of life for children with Down syndrome.
  • Kidsave International, an organisation which encourages families to adopt older children from orphanages in Russia and Eastern Europe.
  • Throughout its history, Aeroflot has traditionally supported sports and the Olympic Movement. Most recently, in 2009, it became General Partner for the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games. As part of the partnership programme, Aeroflot will increase the number of flights bound for Sochi and launch new flights from Sochi to a number of destinations in Europe.
  • Russia’s Ministry for Extraordinary Situations (EMERCOM). Aeroflot works closely with the Russian government to provide aid and evacuation services to people affected by conflict or natural disasters.

  • As a major international airline, Aeroflot is a leading employer providing in the recent years more than 14,000 jobs in Russia and at its operations abroad.
  • Like other airlines around the world, Aeroflot has to resort to redundancies at the time of crisis. Nevertheless, it remains committed to investing in its staff and supports a progressive work environment with competitive salaries and benefit packages.

New airport terminal SVO-3

Company Profile

The construction of the Sheremetyevo 3 terminal is planned to complete in the Q3 2009. The new terminal will take over Aeroflot flights, both international and domestic, as well as the flights of SkyTeam members. The terminal can handle up to 12 million passengers a year, which practically doubles the Sheremetyevo throughput capacity.

Sheremetyevo-3 will be the best passenger terminal in the Eastern Europe. The original architectural solution of the Sheremetyevo-3 project has already won the Russian independent  award in the sphere of architecture and development “ARX Awards” in the “Best Transport Infrastructure Object” nomination.

Sheremetyevo-3 will be Russia’s first full-scale international hub, supported by a base company and the global alliance. For passengers’ convenience, it offers 143 check-In counters, including 24 self-check-in kiosks (CUSS-kiosks) and 30 counters for transit passengers and oversized baggage. To speed-up the baggage handling process and improve security, the new terminal will use the Radio Frequency Identification system for baggage recognition, which will reduce the average time of baggage hadling by 90%.

Passengers will be able to use the 6 enhanced-comfort lounges, 5 children’s rooms, 25 shops, 18 catering establishments working around the clock, and many other services. Aeroflot and SkyTeam are assigned  3 business exclusive business halls in the international and domestic departure zones equipped with comfortable rest areas, shower cabins and other conveniences. The “Valday” VIP launge will, among other features, offer passengers individual DVD players with movies to watch, and a “deep relaxation” zone.
